Last year, it was Melaka again for foodoishii and well, we popped by Hoe Kee Chicken Rice along a famous street in the Melaka tourist centre, our favourite place for chicken rice!

Well, I must say their chicken rice balls is quite tasty, they can be eaten on its own and it looks visually appealing. I remember the first time I went there, I actually thought they were fish balls and told the waiter that I wanted like 7 fishballs like the other guy on the other table! haha! How dumb can I be. But these 'fishballs' turned out to be rice balls and they were awesome..

Here's some photos of the place, quite memorable to me. I think everyone who visits Melaka should check out Hoe Kee, especially if you're a chicken rice fan!

Pretty gold signboards! The Food Centre was not exactly upgraded, with dirty tiles and everything, but I guess that's where all the best food in Singapore come from... The upgraded hawker centres don't offer much yummy food as the old-style anymore. A case in point - glutton's bay! It was recently renovated, and I don't really like the or-lua stall anymore - will fill you in in a later post.

Anyway, back to the oyster pancake! It's actually served in a recycle folded box, like those that we used to fold when we were 10 years old using blank A4 pieces of paper... There were huge stacks of folded boxes inside the stall, and it's probably doing a roaring business indeed. Looking at these pictures, I can't wait to go there again!

This box is environmentally friendly, using old brochures (probably from the IT fair kekeke) with just a small piece of brown paper below to absorb the oil... This time it's omusoba, found in many japanese restaurants as well as street hawker fare. Basically, it's yaki soba wrapped in egg omelette with tonkatsu sauce on top. There are also variations like omurice, which is a blend of omelette and rice.

Foodoishii's Omy-Soba Recipe (1 serving)
Well actually, here's the egg-wrapped omusoba recipe.

Ingredients:

Yakisoba Noodles (1 packet, comes with seasoning at most supermarkets; else, get yakisoba sauce)

2 eggs (Added with soy sauce, salt/pepper)

Sliced ginger

Chinese cabbage

Carrots

Sliced chicken/pork, seasoned (with soy sauce, sesame oil and pepper)

Tonkatsu Sauce

Seaweed Flakes

Bonito flakes

Mayonnaise

Add about 1 tablespoon of oil to the wok, and heat it with medium heat. Next, add in ginger and fry, followed by the carrots and cabbage. After frying vegetables, add in meat followed by yaki soba.

On a frying pan, add in the egg, turn to slow-medium heat. When the egg is still a little runny, add in the yakisoba close to one side and use a pair of chopsticks/spoon to fold the omelette (don't worry too much about it if it gets broken or anything). Now that you're almost done, get a plate, and flip the frying pan over it, and there you go, the holes are covered and you get a pretty decent-looking omusoba! If there's still some noodles leftover, you can add it at the side.

Now the fun part! You can decorate the omelette with tonkatsu sauce, sprinkling some bonito flakes or seaweed flakes over it and what-not. And well, (attempt) to make it in a heart-shape, like what I've (destructed) below. IKEA Friends members are entitlted to discounts though, I think. The boiled potatoes have been replaced with fries for today. Love the sauce there. It's delicious. The broccolis' crunchy on the outside, extremely soft on the inside, the salmon is tender and french, and the fries are soft (not crispy) to my liking. Add the sauce on top and you get a heavenly meal!

Another angle of this.

Nasi Goreng, $4.90

Then, this is Sunday's menu for the day, Nasi Goreng. Was a really impressive new concept, if I'm not wrong by the fashionable breadtalk. They seem to be coming up with all the new ideas!

There's 2 choices at the main menu placed outside the shop: thick toast or traditional toast. Besides toast, there 's also other foodstuffs like mee siam and nasi lemak, though I didn't try them. Tried the thick toast instead and here's some pictures:

Peanut butter thick toast
The best of them all. The fragrant, strong smell of sticky peanut butte melts instantly in your mouth when you bite into the fresh thick toast. The peanut butter was just enough to go with the thick toast, surely the best of them all.

Pork floss thick toast
Breadtalk's speciality, tastes OK on thick toast though. A cold shopping mall doesn't promote shopping at all. Worsens global warming too. I had to go outdoors a couple of times just to escape from the cold. Luckily vivo had lots of refreshing outdoor places that were facing the harbour. It allowed us to escape from the freezing cold shopping mall.

Toast Box
1 Harbourfront Walk
#B2-34 VivoCity Singapore 098585
(65) 6278 4434

subway

On leave today, feeling the scorching hot sun, can't wait to wash and put the clothings up for dry...upon finished some housework, we went to subway for breakfast as I promised my daughter. We reached there slightly before 11.00 am, there were only two tables occupied. We sat ourselves at one cosy corner, tuck ourselves in with cheese burger with egg and bacon with egg, carefully prepared by the service staff.

The burger was served in nice white subway paper bag, the cheese was melted and fused into the burger, while the fresh egg provided a nutritious start to the day. All these was sandwiched between the soft, appetizing tender golden bread, it was light, but tasty and fulfilling. We paid about S$4.70 for 2 burgers and 2 drinks as we used the promotion coupon and it was a good bargain, the drinks were ok but not many choices.
I would like to try the other burger instead of the breakfast set as I could see the Subway can customised for the customers' choices.

Location: Amara Shopping Mall

The picture above shows the promotion coupon we used for breakfast.

Technorati - foodoishii

Technorati Profile
